In the autumn of 2008 in Paris, Suzuki unveiled their latest (for the time and for now) entry-level motorcycle entitled the SFV 650 Gladius. Basically a refined SV650, but for the European crowd a whole new kind of riding excitement, the new bike sit on the thin line between impressive performance and awesome styling.

As a 2009 model year, the middleweight Gladius caught on to the public and it is now a much safer ride as Suzuki fitted it with ABS assisted brakes.

Also powered by a 650cc, but featuring parallel cylinders, the Kawi engine develops 72 hp and gets you rid of those nasty vibrations that are so characteristic to V-twins. Styling is nicer for and even though the ER-6N doesn’t look as European as the first two bikes, at least it is original.

Each cylinder head features a compact combustion chamber with two 31mm intake valves set at 14-degrees from the cylinder centerline and two 25.5mm exhaust valves set at 16-degrees from the cylinder centerline.

Fuel pump is lighter and more compact and located within the 15 liter fuel tank.

Increased low-to-mid range torque output as well as a broad and smooth power delivery are produced through changes in Cam profiles, valve lift, a 10% increase in crankshaft inertia, newly staggered intake and exhaust tract lengths and an increase in exhaust system volume. The company will start shipping bikes in the next few months. TVS is not expecting big volumes, but looking at high brand leverage in the US, a predominant high-end big bike market like the Triumph, Harley Davidson, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha.

“America is a small market for two-wheelers with a few lakh units being sold every year and even that is being cornered by bigger bikes. We are expecting to sell a few thousand bikes in the first year, but these will boost our bottomlines, as profit margins are much higher in the overseas markets. Once we establish our brand, we will market more products from the TVS stable in the next few years,” added Mr Goindi.

The Suzuki SV1000S is easy to ride, also very good on the power side and comfort – but somehow just a little bland, which is probably why it never sold in large numbers worldwide. Still the Suzuki SV1000S can be bought relatively cheap compared to what it offers.

The Suzuki SV1000S look similar to the Suzuki SV650, but with twin exhaust pipes. Stock one are quiet but they're easy to replace and replacement can increase the horses pulling this motorcycle.

The liquid-cooled, 4 valve DOHC per cylinder, four-stroke 1000cc V-twin engine is the same as in the Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 big trail style motorcycle. It's then no surprise that the SV1000S engine produces about 120 horsepower.

In the early days of this engine the biggest glitch was a incorrectly machined crank on some earlier models, which caused a horrible knocking sound. But then it was just a sound and nothing was actually going to break.

Riding the Suzuki SV1000S is a pleasure, the handling of the Suzuki SV1000S is excellent, cornering is very easy. Comparing the SV1000S with its smaller brother we have to conclude that the SV1000S is actually easier in the corners then the Suzuki SV650. The suspension of the Suzuki SV1000S isn't the best but it is fully adjustable. It's worth experimenting with it if you're not happy with the handling. Adjusting the suspension can make a huge difference to the riding pleasure.
